What L2 Learners' Processing Strategy Reveals about the Modal System in Japanese: A Cue-based Analytical Perspective

چکیده
Japanese does not exhibit deontic-epistemic polysemy which is recognized among typologically different languages. Hence, in Japanese linguistics, it has been debated which of the two types of modality is more prototypical. This study brings Chinese learner’s acquisition data of Japanese modality to bear on the question of which of the two types of modality is more prototypical, using the Competition Model (Bates and MacWhinney 1981). The Competition Model notion of ‘cues’ as processing strategy adopted by learners reveals the continuity/discontinuity between these two modality

What L2 Processing Strategy Reveals about the Prototypical Relationship: A Case of Japanese Modal Markers of Possibility
Grammaticalization deals with a diachronic process whereby a lexical word evolves into a grammatical word. The typological study recognized the common directionality of grammaticalization among different languages. Two common directionalities in grammaticalization are recognized in the case of the modal markers of possibility: (1) ability > root possibility > permission 1 and (2) ability> root ...
متن کاملOnline Processing of English Wh-Dependencies by Iranian EFL Learners
To be able to reach the level of ultimate attainment in the second language, learners need to acquire not only the grammar of the L2 but also the language processing mechanisms involved in the comprehension of sentences in real time. Contrary to its importance, very little is known yet about online L2 processing. This study examines whether advanced Iranian learners of English reactivate disloc...
متن کاملCue Competition between Animacy and Word Order: Acquisition of Chinese Notional Passives by L2 Learners
Based on the Competition Model (Bates & MacWhinney, 1978; MacWhinney, 2005; MacWhinney, 2012), the present study investigates L2 cue strategies in the acquisition of Chinese notional passives by English-speaking and Japanese-speaking learners. Two experiments were conducted to examine both the comprehension and production of Chinese notional passives. The main findings included: 1) L2 learners’...
متن کاملEffects of Pitch Fall and L1 on Vowel Length Identification in L2 Japanese
This study investigated whether and how the role of pitch fall in the first language (L1) interacts with its use as a cue for Japanese phonological vowel length in the second language (L2). Native listeners of Japanese (NJ) and L2 learners of Japanese with L1 backgrounds in Mandarin Chinese (NC), Seoul Korean (NK), American English (NE), and French (NFr) participated in a perception experiment....
متن کاملReassembling Formal Features in Articles by L1 Persian Learners of L2 English
There has been considerable debate over what the sources of morphological variation in second language acquisition are. From among various hypotheses put forth on the topic, the feature reassembly hypothesis (Lardiere, 2005) assumes that it is the reconfiguration of features in the L2 which causes variation between the performance of natives and non-natives. Acknowle...
